Announcing the Glebe Intitute Fund

Glebe offers our children one of the best educations in the province. Yet if you take the opportunity to tour the school, you will see that many of the school's 93 year old  indoor and outdoor facilities are sorely in need of a facelift!

This year, with your help, we can begin to change that.

School Council is launching a trust, called the Glebe Intitute Fund (GIF), used to finance new facilities for the school. One of the first projects we will support is the transformation of the school library into a Learning Commons. Our first official event this fall will be a school social and tour, led by our principal, France Thibeault. (Details on the project & event to come.)

You can help in several ways:

To join the Fundraising committee or our events volunteer roster, please contact Caroline Coady, at "c.c.coady at gmail.com". For more information about School Council, please contact Bethany Sutton ("bsutton at glebeschoolcouncil.ca") or Carol Malatesta.

Thank you for your support.

Fall Fundraiser - Gin & Jazz, a Celebration of Glebe in the 20s

2016-10-28 19:00
2016-10-28 23:00

When Glebe Collegiate Institute first opened its doors to students in 1922, World War I had ended just four years earlier. The mood was celebratory, the Jazz Age was in full swing.

On Friday October 28, the cafeteria at Glebe Collegiate will be transformed into a 1920s Jazz Club where alumni, current and former staff, students, parents, and community friends will gather to celebrate Glebe Collegiate’s first decade – the roaring twenties.

The evening will feature the live music of The Chords -- a local band which includes two former Glebe teachers, Bruce MacGregor and Brian MacMillian, a signature Glebe 1920s cocktail, appetizers, Charleston demonstrations, Glebe wear, and lots of Glebe memorabilia.

The idea is to hold an annual event to celebrate the decades leading up to Glebe’s 100th anniversary in 2022. This year we're celebrating the 1920s, Glebe's first decade. Next year's celebration will highlight the 1930s and 40s, the following year the 1950’s, and so on until we reach 2022 -- which isn’t really that far away.

The evening is turning into a Glebe reunion of sorts, as many former Glebe students and staff are keen to return to their old school. Guests are invited to dress the part in 1920s fashion.

Proceeds from this event will go toward the school’s Learning Commons Library renovation project.

Tickets are $25 and available either at Glebe Collegiate's main office, between 8:00am and 3:00pm starting October 10, or online at https://www.universe.com/glebeginjazz. A limited number of tickets are available, so be sure to get yours soon!

Fill the Gap

This annual campaign is a donation request fundraiser to purchase items not covered through the usual OCDSB allocations.

How it works: We ask teachers to provide wish list items that will enrich the courses they teach or enhance a club that they are supervising. The School Council considers the requests in accordance with a set if criteria including how many students will benefit. Items that have been purchased in the past through 'Fill the Gap' include: spin bikes, sports equipment, T shirts for clubs and peer support groups, a stove for the Community Living Group, and costumes for the drama department.

The Parent School Council will again be offering the opportunity to order a personalized auditorium seat plaque in exchange for a donation to 'Fill the Gap'. What better way to leave your mark at Glebe than to order a seat plaque with your child's name on it.

More information about 'Fill the Gap' and the auditorium seat plaques can be found in the attached flyer.

Roll Out Your Rims to Support Glebe CI Fundraiser

2017-04-30 09:18

The Glebe CI Prom Committee is organizing an "Anything on Wheels" fundraiser, in partnership with Hopewell PS, Sunday, April 30th from 9am to noon at Hopewell School.  This is a great opportunity to pass on your gently used spring/summer gear to a good home, make a profit, and support our two largest community schools – Glebe Collegiate and Hopewell Ave. PS.

To sell your gently used wheels (bikes, strollers, rollerblades, skateboards, scooters  etc.), roll them on down to the Hopewell Ave PS garage, Saturday April 29th, from 2-5pm. Friendly parent and student volunteers will help you unload, set a price, choose the school to support (Hopewell/Glebe), and tag and display your items. Sunday, April 30th, beginning at 9am, volunteers will sell your equipment while you relax and enjoy your day or, even better, shop for new wheels at the sale. Once the sale ends, come by and pick up your profits and any unsold goods.

This fundraiser will support school council initiatives such as yard maintenance, health and safety workshops, and improving the technology in the schools. This year Glebe's profits will go toward the Glebe CI prom, with the goal of making it more inclusive, affordable and accessible. Glebe students will also be on hand to provide bike maintenance advice/demonstrations.

Thank you for supporting our community schools!

How “Fill the Gap” 2008/2009 Donations Were Allocated

Each year, Glebe School Council conducts a "Fill the Gap" campaign to raise funds to for three student awards, and to meet teachers’ requests for funds to support clubs, teams, activities, and for enhancements to classroom programs. Note that funds are NOT used for materials or activities that are required to deliver the curriculum, as these are paid for through our tax dollars.
You Helped Fill the Gap!

In 2008/2009, donations totaled $4,545 from 72 contributors. As the table below shows:

  • $300 was allocated to the three student awards ($100 each).
  • Most of the funds ($4000) filled teacher/group requests.
  • A small amount ($245) offset administrative costs the Council incurred in running the campaign (for this year and next year)

Students - $300.00 Three awards ($100 each)
English Department - $850.00 For a laptop to be shared by 3rd Floor staff
Drama Department - $200.00 To contribute to costumes and production costs
Math Department - $1,000.00 To contribute to specialized software
Writer’s Craft Anthology Project - $200.00 To help offset publishing costs
Language Department - $150.00 For computer speakers
Robotics Club - $300.00 For competition T-shirts
Geography & Outdoor Education - $800.00 To contribute to GPS units
Boys Rugby Team - $500.00 To contribute to rugby equipment
School Council - $245.00 Administrative fees (bank fees, labels, envelopes, etc.)

This year, requests from staff totaled $12,000. School Council used several criteria (established in 2007/2008) to help guide our allocation of the funds.

  1. The potential impact on improving student learning/student environment (academic, cultural, physical/recreational (low/medium/high).
  2. The number of students that will benefit (the more students that benefit, the better).
  3. $300 will be set aside for student awards ($100 to each of three students)

In addition, the Council took into account whether or not the requesting group had access to other funds, and whether or not the group had received funds in the previous year(s).

Glebe School Council extends a warm "thank you" to the parents/guardians who made donations—they make a difference in the life of the students at Glebe!
