Upcoming Family Service Ottawa Courses

Family Services Ottawa provides over 20 parenting courses and seminars each school year.

Each year over 700 Ottawa parents participate in FSO’s parenting programs which cover everything from positive discipline techniques to parenting through high conflict divorce and separation. Programs run from one night to 10 weeks; many are offered twice a year. We also provide one to two-hour external parenting workshops to groups and organizations including Parent Councils.

Please find attached our 2015 – 2016 parenting programs catalogue, flyers for upcoming courses and a list of the workshops and presentations that we offer externally.

Upcoming Film: Beyond Measure

Operi is hosting a special screening of the film "Beyond Measure" at St. Paul's University in the amphitheatre. Tickets are $13.15.

A bit of background from the producers:

Every day we hear stories about America’s troubled education system. And we’re told that in order to fix what’s broken, we need to narrow our curricula, standardize our classrooms, and find new ways to measure students and teachers. But what if these “fixes” are making our schools worse.

In Beyond Measure, we set out to challenge the assumptions of our current education story.

Rather than ask why our students fail to measure up, this film asks us to reconsider the greater purpose of education. What if our education system valued personal growth over test scores? Put inquiry over mimicry? Encouraged passion over rankings? What if we decided that the higher aim of school was not the transmission of facts or formulas, but the transformation of every student? And what if this paradigm-shift was driven from the ground up? By students, parents, and educators? By all of us?

Ottawa Citizen: Ottawa schools grapple with the Exam Question: Are they a) outdated or b) essential?

From an article in the Citizen on Friday:

Glebe Collegiate Institute has earned a city-wide reputation as a leader in the development and use of alternative testing methods.

Principal France Thibault says the school has embraced that effort as part of a drive to make the classroom experience more compelling. The school, she says, tries to inject critical thinking, problem solving, and student-based inquiry — an approach that capitalizes on students’ natural sense of wonder — into all of its classes.
